Our Approach

HOW are we performing?

As part of our sustainability initiative, Ameren has sought to assess our performance—what we’re doing well and what we can do better. Members of Ameren’s internal Corporate Social Responsibility Steering Committee collaborated to consider enterprise-level categories, areas of success and areas for improvement. Additional guidance was provided by our Executive Leadership Team and subject-matter experts. Our assessment covers the past several years and is current through March 1, 2017.

  • Ongoing participation in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Climate Change and Water Programs. Ameren’s 2016 CDP Climate Change Response and Water Response both received a “B,” an improvement over our previous rating of “C” for our 2015 Climate Change Response.
  • Ongoing participation in the St. Louis Regional Chamber’s Green Business Challenge. In 2016, Ameren received the Award of Achievement and Star in the Circle of Excellence at the Champion Level.
  • Sponsoring events such as the Achieving a Sustainable Energy Future Conference in April 2016. More than 200 thought leaders from academia, energy industries and government agencies gathered at Saint Louis University (SLU) for the conference, which focused on the energy industry, transportation sector, urban development and policy development. Ameren also sponsors a Center for Sustainability Speaker Series at SLU.
  • Joining the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Natural Gas STAR Methane Challenge Program, which launched in March 2016. Through the program, Ameren Illinois pledges to voluntarily make and track commitments to reduce emissions and improve air quality.
  • Ongoing participation in the Electric Power Research Institute’s (EPRI) Energy Sustainability Interest Group and Sustainability Benchmarking Project, sharing best practices.
  • Recycling more than 129.6 million pounds of material in 2016, including copper, steel, aluminum, plastic and wood. Ameren voluntarily participates in the EPA’s WasteWise program.
  • Ameren reached the milestone of recycling more than 10 tons of used rechargeable batteries with Call2Recycle, a product stewardship program providing no-cost battery and cellphone recycling solutions. Ameren has partnered with Call2Recycle since 2005.
  • Converting previous warehouse space into “The Hub,” where the company’s Innovation Action teams collaborate to share ideas, test theories and meet with other innovative thinkers in the energy technology space. Low VOC finishes, LED lighting and reclaimed materials are some of the efficiencies made throughout the facility.
  • Supporting constructive regulatory frameworks: In December 2016, electric formula ratemaking in Illinois was extended through 2022. This important legislation paves the way for Ameren Illinois to continue a world-class energy infrastructure modernization program for central and southern Illinois, to provide customers with greater tools to manage their energy usage and create quality jobs — all while maintaining affordable rates.
  • Releasing a free set of diversity and inclusion training materials, “Discussions Across Differences,” designed to increase communication skills and awareness of issues relating to diversity and inclusion. The materials, which Ameren uses for its own employees, are free to community organizations, businesses and other groups.
  • Earning recognition: Ameren’s 2016 Corporate Social Responsibility Report was the top-ranked report among U.S. energy providers in a global competition. It also ranked No. 20 out of about 1,000+ companies worldwide—across all industries/sectors—in the League of American Communication Professionals’ Vision Awards. No other U.S. utility was in the Top 100.
  • Supporting sustainability principles through Ameren’s Corporate Sustainability Council.
  • Participating in the Electric Utility Industry Sustainable Supply Chain Alliance (Alliance). Ameren is partnering with other utilities (through the Alliance) on introducing sustainability into the supplier relationship management process.

  • Focusing on consistent improvement in safety performance over the long term.
  • Improving awareness of sustainability within Ameren’s workforce through increased communication and transparency regarding our achievements and opportunities for greater sustainability.
  • Establishing a Biodiversity Policy with the goal of sustaining native plant and aquatic life throughout our service territory.
  • Achieving top-quartile employee engagement scores.
  • Refreshing a company-specific sustainability materiality assessment using EPRI’s sustainability maturity model.
